Getting Java running in browsers
SimulConsult's software uses the programming language Java. All recent
browsers on Windows, Macintosh and Unix can run Java, though in some instances you need to download Java
support and in some instances the Java implementation has bugs. If your
browser is running Java you will see the words "Java is working" in
the box below:
If not, find your browser in the list below and get details on
how to get Java running. If Java is running and you don't know what
browser version you have click this
link.
- Windows: You need Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4, 2000, XP
(Tablet Edition with pen input works),
or Vista and
either:
- Microsoft
Internet Explorer
- If you do not have
Microsoft's Java installed you
can follow the directions
here
(but not for Windows 2000 or Vista)
to install it and then update to the newest version using
Windows Update immediately.
- Sun's Java has crash bugs in
versions 5 and 6.
The bugs are fixed so far
only in alpha versions of Java 7.
- If neither Microsoft nor Sun Java works, ask your computer administrators how to
get access to Java.
- Firefox
- Check that Java is enabled on "Tools | Options | Content". You may need to install Sun's Java,
with release versions available
from here.
Please note that the current release versions 5 and 6 have crash bugs
that are fixed so far only in
alpha versions of Java 7 (available
here).
- Macintosh OS X:
- Safari:
Works well only if you are using OS 10.4 (Tiger) or higher.
- Firefox
- Check that Java is enabled on "Tools | Options | Content".
- Other platforms: The software runs on Linux
according to one report we've gotten but we have not tweaked and tested for
that environments. Please let us
know if you are using an environment and would like it to be supported.
