Dashboard how to: interpret the results of organic acid tests

Many hospitals have the ability to perform organic acid assays in-house, but often do not have a pathologist on staff with the training to do the interpretation.

You can readily do the clinical correlation of organic acid results with the patient’s other findings using the Dashboard, without specialized training. Go to Dx/Add tests, and select Organic acid on the menu in the top right. Organic acids are a bundle, but you can also see the most relevant acids on which to comment, with the green usefulness shading.

To illustrate the organic acids, shown is a 6-year-old boy with pertinent positives of Macrocephaly;  Jaundice, significant and Muscle cramps, frequent or severe.

To confirm your thinking you could select one of the organic acids and go to the Assess finding in the differential diagnosis, indicated by the green V on the top black navigation bar. The lauric acid test result would clearly be highly discriminatory among the top diseases in the differential diagnosis.
